In the Manner of the Chapel CD

The term a cappella is Italian for "in chapel style," or "in the manner of the chapel." For the first millennium and a half or so, instrumentation was either frowned upon or forbidden in chapels and churches, and so the term has now come to mean "without instruments."

Laura and David designed the songs on this album to be sung without instruments. While some tonal instruments were used on a few songs in the recording, most were recorded with only percussion or with no instruments at all. Even small assemblies will find the simple refrains singable, while allowing some challenges for choir, cantor or soloist. As on their first album, there are a number of musical styles as well: Renaissance, Celtic, Caribbean, Gospel, Spiritual, aliotoric chant, and rock & roll.

New arrangements of two of the songs from this album, "Glory and Praise Forever" and "Go Out and Tell the Good News," can be found in Oregon Catholic Press's Music Issue; Breaking Bread; Heritage Missal; Singing the Psalms, Volume 5; and the hymnal Glory and Praise, Second Edition. The latter song has just been released by OCP as an octavo. The song list is as follows:

Gather Round / Daniel 3: Glory and Praise Forever / Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord / Psalm 18: Lord, My Rock / Psalm 16: Keep Me Safe, O God / How Great Is the Lord / Salvation Is of the Lord / Holy Family Kyrie / Mary Had a Baby / Psalm 117: Go Out and Tell the Good News / Psalm 104: Lord, Send Out Your Spirit / Psalm 146: Praise the Lord, My Soul / Psalm 29: The Lord Will Bless the People / Holy Family Easter Alleluia
