This remarkable
and groundbreaking video offers a unique hybrid of storytelling and dance
created by Betsey Beckman,
one of the finest
liturgical dancers in North America. Here is the Bible -- and two of its
most important women -- made powerfully present with an expressive artistry
to charge the imagination, soften the heart, and fire the soul with love.
"Part I: Miriam
of the Dance" (18 minutes) tells the story of the Exodus from Egypt through
the eyes of Moses' older sister, the prophet Miriam, who leads the people
in a dance of joy upon safely crossing the Sea of Reeds. "Part II: The
Annunciation" (15 minutes) paints Mary's "Yes!" to God's call, and her
body blooms with the divine and she dances to composer David Haas' soaring
setting of the Magnificat. Scripts with musical accompaniment by Laura
and David Ash with minor differences from the actual video performance
are available separately.
"She is the Word
expressed in movement, as anyone who watches The Dancing Word will see
with joy. Joined to the music of Laura and David Ash, the inspiration quotient
is high." -- John Foley, SJ
